Abstract:

The Delaware Antiques Show includes guest speakers and antique dealers to display American antiques and decorative arts. Arminda du Pont (1927-1997) was the founder and the first chairperson of the Delaware Antiques Show. Henry Francis du Pont (1880-1869) was a major collector of American decorative arts, his home, became the Winterthur Museum in 1951. This collection includes one candid photograph of Arminda du Pont (Mrs. E. I. du Pont) and Henry Francis du Pont at the 1967 Delaware Antiques Show.

Atlantic Aviation Corporation photographs

Abstract:

Atlantic Aviation was begun by Henry Belin du Pont (1898-1970) in 1927 to provide services for business aviation. In 1948 it moved from the Du Pont Airport to the new New Castle County Airport south of Wilmington, Delaware. Soon it expanded to other airports around the country. The collection includes portraits and views of Atlantic Aviation facilities at various airports. There are also a few photographs of airplanes, including the Spirit of St. Louis.

Crawford H. Greenewalt films and sound recordings

Abstract:

Crawford Hallock Greenewalt (1902-1993) was a chemical engineer and the President of the DuPont Company from 1948 to 1962. He had a passion for the natural sciences, and combined his love of ornithology with photography. He was especially known for his high speed photographs of hummingbirds. The bulk of the collection consists of nature films shot by Greenewalt, primarily of hummingbirds. The collection is divided into three series: Nature films, DuPont films and Sound recordings.

Edward G. Bradford, II (1848-1928) was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the District of Delaware. He married Eleuthera Paulina du Pont in 1872. This collection consists of photographs of the du Pont family and estate, as well as numerous postcards.

This collection contains thirteen photographic items, mostly portraits of Alexis I. du Pont and other du Pont family members.

E. Paul du Pont (1887-1950) established Du Pont Motors, Inc., a manufacturing company of luxury automobiles, in 1919 in Wilmington, Delaware. He worked for a short time at the family business, E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company which manufactured gunpowder. He was one of ten children of Francis Gurney du Pont (1850-1904) and Eliza Wigfa Simons du Pont (1849-1919). This small collection contains photographs of DuPont powder yards; family photographs; home exteriors; and postcard views of Longwood Gardens.

E. Paul du Pont papers

Eleuthère Paul du Pont (1887-1950) was the founder of the luxury automobile company DuPont Motors, Incorporated in 1919. In 1930, E. Paul du Pont also became the president of the Indian Motorcycle Company in Springfield, Massachusetts. Throughout his life, E. Paul du Pont developed numerous patents and wrote articles for various trade publications in the automobile industry. DuPont Motors, Incorporated was a manufacturing company of luxury automobiles, founded by E. Paul du Pont in 1919 in Wilmington, Delaware. Indian Motorcycle Company is a manufacturer of a wide variety of motorcycles. In 1930, after selling DuPont Motors, Incorporated stock, E. Paul du Pont bought a large share of Indian Motorcycle Company stock and became the company president. This collection documents both the professional and personal history of Eleuthère Paul du Pont and his family. The material spans from the end of the nineteenth century through the twentieth century. The collection is predominantly textual material and photographic prints having to do with both DuPont Motors, Incorporated and Indian Motorcycle Company administrative and financial correspondence and advertising and publications. Besides business material, the collection includes personal letters between E. Paul du Pont and his siblings and children, and family snapshots and portraits usually taken at their home in Delaware.

Edward B. du Pont (1934-2017) was vice president of the Wilmington Trust Company, served on numerous boards of directors, and was descended from the founders of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont Company. This small collection documents Edward B. du Pont's service on the boards of directors for the DuPont Company, Atlantic Aviation, and the Hagley Museum and Library, as well as the board of trustees for the University of Delaware, primarily through group portraits. His work for the DuPont Company is most heavily represented. The collection is arranged chronologically. The majority of images date from 1977 to 2003.

Francis I. du Pont (1873-1942) was a chemist, inventor, and stockbroker most celebrated for his involvement with the partnership of Francis I. du Pont and Company, stockbrokers in New York, and the Delaware Chemical Engineering Company in Wilmington. This collection contains a color photograph of a portrait of Francis I. du Pont painted by Gordon Stevenson (1892-1984).

Gabrielle Shubrick Crofton (1835-1894) was the daughter of Alfred I. du Pont's first cousin, Julia Sophia du Pont (1806-1882) and Irvine Shubrick (1797-1849). This collection consists of two individual portraits, one of Gabrielle Shubrick Crofton and the other of Alfred I. Du Pont.

She was the second child of R.R.M. Carpenter (1877-1949) and Margaretta Lammot du Pont (1884-1973) and a granddaughter of Lammot du Pont (1831-1884). Irénée du Pont (1876-1963) was a chemical engineer. He began work for E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. in 1903 in the Construction Division of the Black Powder Operating Department. After holding several positions within the company he went on to be the president of the DuPont Company. He served in this capacity from 1919 until 1926. The collection consists of photographs related to Irénée du Pont's family, personal interests, and involvement with organizations such as the Delaware Safety Council.

She was the last du Pont to live on the Eleutherian Mills estate. This collection consists of photographic and graphic materials primarily of Crowninshield's extended du Pont family and friends. The collection has been organized into four series: Family portraits, Travel photographs, Residences, and Mary Pauline Foster du Pont sketches and collection of travel souveniers.

Alfred Irénée du Pont (1864-1935) was the eldest son of E. I. du Pont (1829-1877). He joined the family gunpowder firm in 1884, eventually becoming co-owner. He was an accomplished musician who composed many scores, however, he destroyed most as he became deaf. Only six survive. This compact disc contains six sound recordings of scores composed by Alfred I. du Pont. Performed by the New Tankopanicum Orchestra, conducted by Brian Cox, Published in Greenville, DE : Tank CD p1993. Includes program notes (1 folded sheet [6] p. : ill.) inserted in container.

Nye Committee munitions investigations photographs

Abstract:

In the spring of 1934 the Senate's Special Committee Investigating the Munitions Industry chaired by Senator Gerald P. Nye (1892-1971) began to examine the role that the munitions manufacturers had played during the First World War. This collection consists of photographs of P. S. du Pont, Irénée du Pont, Lammot du Pont, and A. Felix du Pont testifying before the Nye Committee in September of 1934.

Pierre Samuel "P.S." du Pont (1870-1954) was the great grandson of Eleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834), founder of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, and that company played a major role in P.S. du Pont's life. He is most well-known for developing the preeminent botanical gardens, Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. This item is a matted portrait of P.S. du Pont, autographed on front beneath image area.

Place du Pont in Nemours, France photographs

Abstract:

Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817) was a noted French Physiocrat and economic advisor to Jacques Necker and King Louis XVI. In 1784, Louis XVI made him a noble through the process of noblesse de lettres, which added the de Nemours suffix to his name. In the aftermath of the French Revolution he and his family emigrated to the United States where his son Eleuthère Irénée du Pont established the gun powder manufacturer E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. These photographs show a close-up of the Place Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours metal plaque and the building on which it hangs in Nemours France, ancestral home of the du Pont family.

Victorine Elizabeth du Pont Foster (1849-1934), daughter of Henry du Pont (1812-1889) and Louisa Gerhard du Pont (1816-1900), grew up at Eleutherian Mills, near Wilmington, Delaware. The drawing is a detailed plan of the formal garden at Eleutherian Mills. Placement of trees, flowers, and vines, etc., are indicated on the drawing.

The Hagley Portrait file is an artificial collection (e.g., created and assembled by the archivist) composed almost entirely of photographic reproductions and copy negatives, with very few original prints. The Portrait file is intended to be a resource to assist in locating images of individuals. The images are not always of high quality, nor does Hagley own the copyright or the originals of all the images. The portraits are primarily formal individual portraits; there are some informal snapshots or group portraits. More than half of the collection depicts du Pont family members or those associated with the du Pont family. Pierre Samuel "P.S." du Pont (1870-1954) was an industrialist, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. He was president of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. from 1915 to 1919 and chairman of the board from 1919 to 1940. P.S. du Pont was the great grandson of Eleuthere Irenee du Pont (1771-1834), founder of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, and the great-great-grandson and namesake of the French economist, Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817). du Pont's personal life is well documented by the photographic collection he left, and it followed certain themes. The greatest of these may be horticultural interests which developed during his creation of the celebrated Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, where he lived. du Pont made many foreign and domestic journeys and recorded his travels. His large extended family is included in this collection. This collection is organized into seven series: Longwood Gardens; Individuals and families; Groups and organizations; E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company; Trips and vacations; Places; and Culture, society, and service.

T. Coleman (Thomas Coleman) du Pont (1863-1930) was President of the DuPont Company from 1902 to 1915, and a U.S. Senator from Delaware from 1921 to 1928. He married Alice du Pont (1863-1937) in 1891. The "Old Mill" was constructed in 1909 to 1910 as a weekend home for T. Coleman du Pont in an area near Greenville, Delaware. These photographs document the Old Mill, retreat of T. Coleman du Pont, and the surrounding gardens planted by his wife, Alice.

The Du Pont Story is a feature film directed by Wilhem Thiele, as William J. Thiele (1890-1975). The Du Pont Story is a historical drama which tells the story of the DuPont Company through the administrations of the company's first ten presidents. This collection consists of a motion picture employee, Dixie Moore's (aka. Dixie Fuller) research binder, primarily containing photographic reproductions of portraits and silhouettes of du Pont family members that are portrayed in the film.

William du Pont, Sr. (1855-1928) was an industrialist and member of the prominent du Pont family of Delaware, whose family business was the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, also known as the DuPont Company which was a large manufacturer of gunpowder. He worked for the first DuPont dynamite manufacturer, Repauno Chemical Company, as secretary and treasurer (1880-1884) and after the tragic death of Lammot du Pont (1831-1884), as president (1884-1892). William du Pont, Jr. was the youngest child of du Pont, Sr. and Annie Rogers Zinn du Pont (1858-1827). Du Pont Jr. became the president of Delaware Trust Company in 1929, the youngest bank president in Wilmington at that time. In 1952, he became chairman of the board, retaining both positions until his death in 1965. This collections consists of photographic material mostly relating to the U.S.F. Powder Company, together with the Ball Grain Explosives Company which was in a way U.S.F. Powder Company predecessor. It also includes William du Pont's family photographs and negatives.

This collection includes photographs of interiors and exteriors of du Pont family estates and homes in Delaware, as well as portraits and snapshots of du Pont and Laird family members. The collection also contains a large number of lantern slides, blueprints, maps, and film reels of home movies and family skits.
